WHAT WE OFFER

Welcome to the ADHD Adult Program, offered to participants 16 years of age and older (Children and youth 15 years old and younger may be assessed for ADHD through our General Psychiatry Program). This program has been designed to provide comprehensive support and understanding for adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Online Therapy Centre has teamed up with PMVC Psychiatrists across Ontario to offer a collaborative care model of treatment to our clientele. The traditional mental health system can be overwhelming and hard to navigate, where clients often receive lengthy wait times when seeking psychiatric care. Through our collaborative network, clients receive access to psychiatric ADHD assessments. Our Virtual Clinic connects clients with both a psychotherapist and psychiatrist through a secure online care platform. This consultation will provide clients with necessary medications or a medication check, as well as psychiatric assessment and diagnosis. Follow up consultations with your Psychiatrist will be available to clients as needed, and may be scheduled by your Psychotherapist. With this collaborative care initiative, a medical report will be sent directly to clients’ family physicians. This is a team-based support system that will help clients get the most comprehensive mental health care that fits their needs, right away.

HOW IT WORKS

WHAT IS ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. While it’s often recognized in children, ADHD affects adults too, influencing their daily functioning, relationships, and career. Challenges in adults can include time management, organization, emotional regulation, and focus.

UNDERSTANDING ADULT ADHD?

Prevalence:
ADHD in adults is a prevalent condition, though exact figures can vary. It is estimated that approximately 5-10% of adults globally have ADHD.

Underdiagnosis and Undertreatment:
Many adults with ADHD remain undiagnosed. This underdiagnosis is often due to a lack of awareness, stigma, and the misconception that ADHD is only a childhood disorder. ADHD can persist from childhood into adulthood in up to 60-70% of cases. However, symptoms may present differently in adults.

Symptoms in Adults:
Adult ADHD symptoms include inattention, disorganization, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and difficulties with time management. Emotional dysregulation, such as mood swings and irritability, is also common. Adults with ADHD may face challenges in workplace settings, relationships, and daily functioning.

Comorbidities:
ADHD in adults is frequently accompanied by other mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, and learning disabilities.

Impact on Life:
Adult ADHD can significantly impact various life areas, including occupational performance, educational attainment, and interpersonal relationships. There is a higher likelihood of underemployment, academic underachievement, and interpersonal
difficulties.

Diagnosis Complexity:
Diagnosing ADHD in adults is more complex than in children due to overlapping symptoms with other mental health disorders and the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the individual’s history.

Treatment:Treatment typically involves a combination of medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle modifications. Psychoeducation is also a crucial component, helping individuals understand and manage their condition effectively.

Societal Perceptions:
Increased awareness and reduced stigma have led to more adults seeking diagnosis and treatment for ADHD. However, there is also concern about the trivialization of the diagnosis and overdiagnosis in some cases.

Complexities of Diagnosing Adults
Diagnosing ADHD in adults is intricate due to several factors:

  • Overlap with Other Conditions: Adult ADHD symptoms often overlap with those of other mental health issues like anxiety and depression, making differentiation challenging.
  • Developmental History: Accurate diagnosis requires evidence of symptoms from early childhood, necessitating detailed developmental history.
  • Comorbidity: ADHD in adults is frequently accompanied by other mental health conditions, complicating the diagnostic process.
